INSIDE: The Best Things to Do in Auckland with Kids. Updated 2024.
I didn’t love this city the first time I visited.
It felt bland, and a little boring.
But like all good things that grow on you, Auckland is now one of our favourite places to go in New Zealand.
The people are delightful, everything is close by, the harbour views sparkle, and even that upward slog when you walk to the Myers Park playground from the New Zealand Maritime Museum doesn’t seem so strenuous.
Take a look at our travel finds below!

BEST THINGS TO DO IN AUCKLAND WITH KIDS
Correct at time of publication on Roam the Gnome. Please check with venue for updates. We apologise in advance if there have been any changes we are unaware of. All prices in NZ dollars, unless otherwise stated
New Zealand’s harbour city with kids is fabulous too.
It’s safe, kid-friendly, and the public transport is easy.
(Kids ride free on the Skybus from the airport to the city too.)
The only downside is the cost of eating out.
You definitely need to make friends with the local supermarkets in New Zealand so you can buy fruit, snacks, yoghurts, muesli bars, bread, and ready-to-eat food for breakfast and in-between meals.

It’s definitely worth a look.
Smack bang in the centre of the city, this green oasis of beautifully designed play equipment has stuff for all ages to do.

Auckland Art Gallery and Auckland Library are nearby too.
Toddlers and preschoolers will love the animal sculptures.

The play equipment at this Auckland playground is a little unique, a modern twist on old favourites.
There’s:

And…
- giant reimagined “leaves” to climb over and around, and
- soft artificial grass to soften any falls.
BYO marbles to run down the spiral marble runs.

They won’t be bored at Myers Park Playground either.

See how long it takes the family members to get around this climbing frame without touching the floor.
Try the monkey bars with a difference.
Watch out – those metal circles move unexpectedly!
Nearby, the giant concrete steps, and the wooden platform with ledges and angled rises, challenge for the most nimble of feet.
My boys loved the spider web basket swing – super LONG chains help it swing super dooper high!
I loved the rubber mat flooring underneath the climbing frame and swings.

BEST AUCKLAND ART GALLERIES, MUSEUMS, AND LIBRARIES
No.1: Auckland MOTAT NZ
The MOTAT museum is one of the best one day adventures for kids in town.
Find hands on activities in 8 sheds, outdoor areas, and other buildings on site.
DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE.
No matter how hard he tried, Ned could not work out how to spin the dial correctly on the old telephone.
His most successful try was with an UPSIDE DOWN thumb!
Watching him struggle brought my mum and I to tears of laughter.
It’s not that long ago that these telephones were the norm, but modern kids have never faced the struggle.
Equally strange, I’d forgotten how long it took to call a friend!
This fun experience is just one of the fun things to do at MOTAT Museum of Transport and Technology.
The Telecommunications Shed #4 was the highlight of our visit, with fun activities such as being able to call one another on vintage dial phones.
My mum tried her hand, once again, at the old-school switchboard.
50 years after she’d been given a job as a switchboard operator, with no experience at all, and left to fumble her way through a day of patching person to person, she giggled at the absurdity of it all.
Our day was made hearing old familiar telephone ring tones, and watching the boys delight as they dialled one another on phones 70 and 71.
But this was just the first shed.
Motat 1 has nine sheds of activities in total on this site.
Best Things to do at MOTAT Auckland
Here’s an overview of all the MOTAT activities and attractions the whole family will enjoy.
The first thing you’ll see is the train playground.
This outdoor playground in Auckland is centrally placed between the sheds, so no doubt you’ll be back here again and again if you are travelling with toddlers in New Zealand!
No.1: Whisper Experiment
The second thing you’ll see upon entry is the WHISPER sound reverberation experience.
Send one child to one disc, and the other to the one far away, and let them see if they can hear one another’s quiet words!
Then it’s time to head to Shed 1.

- answer the phones on the switchboard, and
- chat to one another through the phone lines too.
There’s a Print Shop, open on Sundays to showcase this labour-intensive art from yesteryear, making newspapers and highlighting the skill of letter writing.
If you visit, you can take home a hand printed souvenir of your time there.
No.8: MOTAT Firehouse

At the bottom of the indoor garden creation, there’s a complex of rainbow light-beam fuelled tunnels to climb through too.
Even my 10 year old loved it!

Motat 2, the Motat Planes exhibition hall, just a tram ride away.
Be wowed by the giant planes inside the MOTAT Aviation Hall – the MONSTER SIZED SHORT SUNDERLAND aircraft is the biggest one of all.
It’s truly a sight to be seen!
It’s one of four left in the world, and the only complete example in New Zealand.
The Sunderland served with the British and New Zealand Air Forces, in Maritime Search, Reconnaissance, and Mercy missions.
The Sunderland played a central role in medical evacuations, childbirth emergencies, search for missing vessels, medical supply drops, and surveys of hurricane damage.
Don’t skip this family friendly attraction, no matter how late in the day it is.
The kids will be in awe.
There’s so much to see at the MOTAT Aviation Hall.
