WHAT TO BUY IN LAPLAND
Correct at time of publication on Roam the Gnome. Please check with venue for updates. We apologise in advance if there have been any changes we are unaware of. All prices in euro, unless otherwise stated
In no particular order, here are the best Finnish souvenirs for family, friends and loved ones.
No.1: Traditional Finnish Dolls
The first thing you should buy is one of the traditional Finnish dolls in full National costume.
I simply adore this country and the people, and the Finland National dress is one of the most stunning in the world.
No.2: Reindeer Hides
Whether you agree or not, reindeer skins are one of the most popular souvenirs in Finland.
These are a much loved souvenir for those who like house design and want a useable souvenir from their Lapland trip.
Check with your country’s rules on importing animal skins before you purchase. The store should have details for you.
No.3: Plastic Snow Sleds & Bum Sliders
One of the best things about staying in the Santa Claus Holiday Village in winter is that there are plastic snow sleds and bum sliders laying around the village that kids can use on the small hills near the playground.
Parents are conned into pulling the kids along too!
I mean, why walk when you can ride?
(You don’t need to be staying in the village to use them. But it’s good practice to return it where you found it)
Jack truly couldn’t believe his eyes when he spotted the plastic snow sleds and bum sliders for sale in the Christmas House gift shop in Santa Claus Village
He thought this would make an excellent souvenir for him to take home to sunburnt Australia!
I’m not sure we’d ever have somewhere to use this, except maybe on the sandhills on Fraser Island in Queensland, so sadly, I said a big no.
He wasn’t happy.
No.4: Santa Gnome toys (Tomten souvenirs)
Everywhere you turn you’ll see 101 variations on the famous Nordic gnome dolls.
There’s Tomte dolls that stand, sit, and ones that guard the front door.
Some Tomten dolls have only noses visible.
Others have crinkly faces, or dangly hands and feet.
No.5: More Finnish Gnomes
They range in size from 5cm tall, up to half a metre tall, and come in all the colours, although mostly red, grey and white.
This year, it’s time for sequinned gnome dolls to appear.
You’ll need to buy at least one.
No.6: Wooden Painted gnomes
The cutest gnomes of all are made from painted timber logs.
How can anyone resist?
No.7: Lapland Soft Toys, Husky toys & Reindeer toys
In most souvenir shops, there’s rows and rows of SEQUINNED reindeers and plush reindeers.
Taylor Swift fans will agree a sequinned version is a must-buy purchase. 😉
Look out for baskets of the cutest soft toys you ever did see too:
- fluffy Husky dog toys with “Lapland” emblazoned harnesses
- red fox toys, and
- bears.
No.8: Finnish Christmas Dolls
Look for these simple but sweet Christmas dolls for ornamental display.
Some of them are to be hung as a Christmas tree ornament.
No.9: Christmas Ornaments from Lapland
Lapland Christmas decorations are a cheap Lapland souvenir option.
You’ll find lots of Finnish bells, as well as baubles, and eggs.
These Christmas decorations from Lapland make great easy-pack and thoughtful gifts to take home for the family.
The only challenge is to limit yourself on how many you buy!
No.10: Traditional Finland Trolls
Looking for something unique to take home?
Trolls are mystical forest-dwelling creatures, derived from Scandinavian myths of old.
Why not snaffle a Finland troll for yourself?
No.11: Lapland Souvenir t-shirts
Look for a varied selection of souvenir t-shirts from Lapland including designs such as:
- Northern Lights Aurora Borealis
- Husky dogs
- Brown bears
- Reindeers
- Arctic Circle crossing souvenir t shirts
No.12: Traditional Lapland Clothing Souvenirs
Finland is home to many different types of clothing and accessories including:
- Traditional Lappish hats
- Hand painted silk scarves
No.13: Finnish Shoes
- Traditional Finnish shoes, patterned with embroidery
- Moomin slippers
Or, these felt shoes.
They are ridiculously warm.
No.14: Snowman Candles & Homewares
There’s also plenty of Christmas inspired candles and homewares to choose from, including these sweet Snowman candles.
And adorable round Santa candles too!
(See picture at top)
This is a more stout version of the traditional Finnish Santa candle, made from a long white taper candle dipped in red and green wax.
What a wonderful Christmas Day table decoration these make.
No.15: Finland Souvenir Mugs
Pick up a new coffee mug with a Finland design.
No.16: Finnish Kuksa coffee cup
Traditional wooden Kuksa mugs and cups are a popular souvenir in Finland.
Kuksa mugs are beloved by Finnish people – everyone has their own one for their morning cuppa, and for camping or hiking trips.
You can also purchase kitchen utensils and tools made from local timbers and reindeer horn, as well as gingerbread cookie cutters in Christmas shapes.
(Check out the Marttiini store in the section on the Santa Village Shops to see some pics)
No.17: Ceramic Candle holders and Santa Snow Globes
Look along the outer walls to find all kinds of ceramics, and breakables, including these Gnome rings, and Snowman circles (pictured below).
No.18: Lapland Art
These Finnish paper cut art displays have a light inside, so you can create shadow boxes. (picture above)
This is the most elegant souvenir in the shop.
No.19: Cheap Lapland Souvenirs
There’s not really such a thing as a ‘cheap Lapland souvenir‘ but if you are looking for small, token gifts, you can’t go wrong with a Finland magnet.
There’s also a range of cheaper Finnish gifts close to the payment counter.
Take a look there to see if anything catches your fancy.
No.20: Traditional Finnish food souvenirs
Food from Finland makes a great, easy carry, lightweight gift too.
- Finnish porridge and granola
- Finnish tea bags
- Finnish gingerbread biscuits
- Finnish chocolate
If you have slightly more room in your suitcase, there’s also:
- Finnish jams, jellies and marmalade
- Lingonberry cordial

Lakritsi Chocolate & Licorice bags
Buy packets of delicious Lakritsi chocolate covered licorice in short bite sized pieces.
These are a popular gift to take when you visit a friend, or to snack on at home on a movie night.
Marabou Chocolate
Look for Marabou chocolate, along with a few other quality Nordic brands.
We can vouch for the Japp chocolate personally.
The gingerbread version is also a unique Finnish souvenir.
No.21: Fazor Chocolates

No.22: Marimekko Fashion and Homewares
According to the shop information, MARIMEKKO is a “Finnish Lifestyle Design House celebrated worldwide for it’s original prints and vibrant colours”.
The Marimekko dress was introduced in the 1950’s, giving Finnish women a chance to dress boldly and bravely in a bland world, and truly embrace the joy of life and share it outwardly in fashion, lifestyle and homewares.
History of Marimekko – The Marimekko meaning
Fun Fact: The Marimekko meaning in Finnish actually translates to “Mari’s dress”.
The most famous Marimekko pattern is arguably the Marimekko flower print known as Unikko, created in 1964 by Maija Isola.

The story of Marttiini knives begins in the early 1900’s when Finnish Blacksmith, Janne Marttiini and horn carver Johannes Lauri launched a knife manufacturing business in the Arctic Circle town of Rovaniemi.

Visiting Finland and looking for a unique Finnish gift for kids, or anyone who loves the quirky characters that are known as the Moomins (or Mummi)?

You need to visit the Moomin Shop inside the Santa Claus Gift House and Arctic Circle Information Centre at the Santa Claus Holiday Village.
It’s the place to buy Finland’s CUTEST souvenirs.
Who are the Moomins of Finland?
From a sign in the shop:
(Edited for length)
“The Moomins are the central characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Swedish-Finn illustrator, visual artist and writer, Tove Jansson, originally published in Swedish in Finland.
They are a family of trolls who are white and roundish, with large snouts, who love adventures with their friends. The carefree and adventurous family live in their house in Moominvalley.
Moominvalley is a peaceful place where the Moomins live in harmony with nature. Moominhouse is the largest building in the valley, and visitors from far and wide are welcome to visit.
The Moomins made a path from the Moominhouse to the seashore, and built a small bathhouse there. Moomins love the sea and playing on the beach.
The Moomins do love a good journey and their adventures take them far and wide, but they know their home is always there for them to return to.
The Moomins are a direct reflection of author-illustrator Tove Jansson’s life philosophy and practices, and people from around the world continue to resonate with her messages”
